My uncle manages his property much like you, Rip... passes on the small ones and takes only the big ones. He figures he's shot enough deer in his time and he gets his meat by gutting, hanging, and storing friends deer in trade for a package or two of venison. Usually has enough to last through winter then make stew in the spring. He's got 600 acres, 30% active farm land the rest woods and stream. Hunts on foot like DH describes, as the bucks get older he finds them less and less on the fields and more and more in the heaviest brush there is.
I'm no hunter but this time of year even I get antsy and wouldn't mind going out. Doubt I'd do the actual shooting but I had a lot of fun spotting deer when I was a kid, and I enjoy tracking.

Tim K, I normally shoot once, if you know that your first shot was a good one then no need to worry. I like taking lung shots, (not much wasted meat) generally 1 shot through the lungs and they go 30-40 yards and expire. The only deer I have ever put 2 shots through was my big 180lb 8 point. first shot was an angled down shot (took a lung, liver and aorta), I knew it was good but because it was so big I executed 2 more, aiming high for a spine shot. second took a 3 inch beech and 3rd dropped him in his tracks. All deer were shot with a .32 caliber win spl. 175 grain.
Managing property around my house is impossible, you have to take what you can get. With so many outlaw hunters who hunt the area I hunt it gets tough, they drive the hell out of the deer, and force them into hiding.

Nice. They look like the pair we saw while fly ice fishing.

wow, the one on the right looks like an absolute monster, nice symmetrical rack.
DH, about 15 years ago my father shot a 10 with a very similar rack to that one (not nearly as massive, but a nice 10) off stockfarm road.

Nice Bucks! The one on the right is a gorgeous rack, 8pt? DH did they come out of your area or downstate? My luck this year has so far been freezer meat. Week and half left, including late muzzleloader. I havnt seen alot of deer movement on my hunting grounds lately, almost like they have begun to herd up and moved out. Maybe this cooler weather will get them moving around. Good luck to whats left of the season.
