This is one of my top running saws. While preparing for some regular maintenance one evening not long ago (preparing for an upcoming GTG in Greenwich NY), I discovered she had a bad rod bearing. So before going any further and risking a catostrophic failure, I'll be putting a new crank in her. No problem right?......wrong! This here is an early model 044 crankcase & cylinder which means it has the old style 10mm wrist pin. Which....are NLA. Soooo, time to try and find a good used OEM crank. The 10mm saws are more sought after than the later model 12mm due to the typical higher compression ratio, more aggressive port timing and higher velocity tranfer ports. This one here is a tad special in that she is built from 2 different saws. #1 being the original crankcase & cylinder of the 10mm flavor and #2 having the fuel tank & filter base of the newer MS440. The newer tank and filter base allows me to use the new style "HD2" air filter,(Kinda like a K&N Cold Air Intake on your rice rocket). The combination of the 2 are pretty impressive to say the least. Well here she is.....here's who I call "Christine" (Stephen King)...all naked and stuff... I found a guy in PA who is supposed to send me a crank. But in the meantime, its a dang good thing I have 2 of these 10mm 044's Theyre as rare as hens teeth I tell ya!! This is what she looked like 2 days before the tear down...

Decided to put a new piston in the ole girl while I have her torn down. I went with a top of the line Meteor piston kit. However......STRRRRRRIKE 1 Notice anything wrong with this? The hole for the ring locating pin was drilled straight through. NOT supposed to be like that. The pin is now recessed too far and if I ran the piston like this, I take a chance of the ring rotating and snagging an upper transfer port or exhaust port. Supposed to look like this. I was pizzed !! I contacted Meteor in Italy....they were shocked, but ya know what....chit happens in every company around the world.

After receiving my replacement piston..... I noticed the windows on my new METEOR piston were smaller than the MAHLE (OEM) windows. So I took it upon meself to open them up a wee bit. Before After

It's looking good bud. I have to bust out my saw pretty soon. A couple tasks to do. 1) find some wood to use in the smokers and 2) I'm clearing a little lot to see how far down it is to solid ledge.

Looks like an awesome project. Nice job on the rebuild.
As someone who knows nothing about saws but am in increasing need of one and on a shrinking budget; any advice? Eventually I imagine I'll need multiple sizes for various tasks but initially its just for tree clearing and cutting wood to size to split.
Have fun at the get together in Greenwich. Bring your fly rods and stop into the Battenkill before you head north.

Bring your fly rods and stop into the Battenkill before you head north. Cant go wrong with a saw in the 50cc range. What is your budget price? Lots of great used pro saws for sale on another forum that I frequent. Keep your eyes peeled on CL for the following saws. STIHL028 AV / Wood Boss 026 / MS260 024 Husqvarna346XP 350 (not a pro saw, but built well) Dolmar5105 If you find something, let me know and I will give you my opinion before you spend any money You should meet me at "The Cutting Edge" in Greenwich on Sunday the 28th. I'm sure there will be plenty of good used saws for sale. Should be a fun time. Heck...theres a guy coming out here all the way from Wisconsin!!

Awesome advice, thanks. Right now my budget is extremely low but I hope to be able to get something decent for the $150-200 range.
I'm in a wedding on the 27th but depending on how I feel on the 28th I might make the trip over. Its only about 30 minutes from my house.
Stupid question; What is the purpose of the raker/spikes at the rear of the bar on your saw?
